In the ultra-competitive world of athletics, athletes are always looking for ways to improve their performance and recovery. It may be with the tried and true methods of proper sleep, eating and hydration or with other methods such as massage therapy, whole-body vibration and compression garments.

But, how many of these claims are legitimate and which ones are just another trend being promoted for profit? We’ve rounded up info on some of these questionable commodities to answer that very question in our brand new blog series: Fact vs. Fiction

In the third part of this series, we're taking a look at something more technical! 

Athlete Electronic Health Records 

An athlete’s performance and recovery depends upon their sports medicine team, including their coach and athletic trainer (AT), as much as it does their gear! One way ATs and other sports medicine professionals can keep track of their athletes’ health is by using Athlete Electronic Health Records (EHR). 

Athlete EHRs, like Presagia Sports, are a secure online database that helps capture important data, such as medical history, diagnosis, treatments and medications in a location where all members of the medical team can contribute, communicate and collaborate with one another.

EHRs play a role in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics and of course, sports. Before these industries had these secure online databases, they used paper and pen to record patient or athlete health information. In 1991 the Institute of Medicine encouraged the use of EHRs because they enable the delivery of safer and higher quality of care to patients and they’ve grown in popularity ever since.

Performance

The best part about an EHR is that it allows for decisions to be made (even during a game) about an athlete’s health. Tools such as concussion assessments, including the SCAT5, allow ATs to diagnose an athlete’s concussion. This in turn helps them make informed decisions about whether their athlete should be playing, and even when to return to play. In turn, athletes who aren’t cleared to play won’t hit the field, and risk under performing or exacerbating their injury. 

Another important aspect of an athlete’s performance is focusing on injury prevention. As stated by Clemson University’s assistant AT, “reporting on most common injuries allows us to come up with methods to change training, to focus more on injury prevention in the future.” Less injuries off the field means better performance on the field! 

Stanford University has also reaped the benefits of using an Athlete EHR for their athletes’ performance, by creating a module called the Stanford Functional Movement Screen (FMS) that captures information related to athlete functional scores, strength and conditioning and performance. This feature has allowed them to collect the following information: measure the outcome of interventions, tracking various trends in order to develop sport specific prevention strategies, identify injury risk early on, and analyze athletes for specific injuries. Stanford’s AT even explains, “with one foot in the performance area, we’re looking to bridge the science and medicine areas as well. The functionality of the system does exactly that, it bridges the gap between performance and research.”

Recovery

Injuries can keep athletes from play, especially if they’re not well accounted for. Athlete EHRs help in this aspect because the entire sports medicine team has a record of all the injuries sustained by an athlete, as well as their treatments. Athlete EHRs also help with an athlete’s recovery process by allowing for identification of trends. For example, sports medicine professionals can run reports to gain insights into trends, track injuries and measure their athletes’ treatment success rates.

Athletes can also report their own information about injuries they’re seeking treatment for using self-service tools in an Athlete Kiosk, which will be communicated with their AT. This allows the AT to develop a plan for treating the athlete. Communication between health professionals about an athlete is crucial because it improves the accuracy and efficiency of treatments, thereby helping with the recovery process.
